NBA Tickets – Lottery Mock: If I Was Picking
Normally, mock drafts are based on what one thinks each team will do, but this mock is based on what I would do if I were running each team picking in the lottery this offseason.
Washington Wizards – John Wall, Point Guard, Kentucky: Wall is going to immediately help sell NBA tickets and he’s basically the consensus number one pick. Passing on him is the kind of move that gets you fired.
Philadelphia 76ers – Evan Turner, Shooting Guard, Ohio State: I’d be really tempted to take Derrick Favors here, but you can’t take that much of a risk with the second overall pick when a reliable player like Turner is on the board. I would look to shop Andre Iguodala after making this pick.
New Jersey Nets – Derrick Favors, Power Forward, Georgia Tech: Favors is an upside pick, but the potential to be great is there. I see his ceiling as some kind of combination of Dwight Howard and a young Antonio McDyess. That kind of potential is too good to pass up on.
Minnesota Timberwolves – Wesley Johnson, Small Forward, Syracuse: If I was running the T-Wolves, I’d look to trade up to get Evan Turner; he’s a perfect fit for this roster. If that’s not plausible, then I’d settle for Wesley Johnson, who would be a nice consolation prize. He’s not going to be a star, but he’d be able to help this team improve right away. He’s the kind of player that could thrive with a point guard like Ricky Rubio, if the Spaniard ever comes to the NBA. The only problem is that both Johnson and Corey Brewer are best-suited at the three.
Sacramento Kings – Ed Davis, Power Forward, North Carolina: This is probably where I begin to disagree with most GMs. I would not be willing to take a risk on DeMarcus Cousins or Al-Farouq Aminu this early, and I really like what Davis bring to the table. He’d bring an instant upgrade from a defensive and rebounding standpoint and could mesh well with softer bigs like Spencer Hawes. He might never be a star, but I think he’s a safe bet to be a solid starter that is willing to do the work inside.
Golden State Warriors – Gordon Hayward, Small Forward, Butler: The Warriors need to take someone that can play right away but also has some upside. Hayward is that type of prospect. He’s also a smart player and would give the team another young piece to build around with Stephen Curry.
Detroit Pistons – Greg Monroe, Power Forward, Georgetown: The Pistons desperately need help inside, and while Monroe doesn’t have the toughness the Pistons covet, he can score both inside and out. Detroit needs a big man to run their offense through and Monroe would certainly fit the bill there. He’s very skilled and a great passer for his size.
Los Angeles Clippers – Eric Bledsoe, Point Guard, Kentucky: Bledsoe might not go in the lottery, but I think he definitely should. He’s got an NBA-ready body and can really knock down outside shots; that will make him valuable from the get-go and he could be groomed to take over for an aging Baron Davis.
Utah Jazz – Patrick Patterson, Power Forward, Kentucky: Carlos Boozer is probably going to leave town this summer, which will thrust Paul Millsap into the starting role at the four. Patterson could come in and provide valuable bench minutes behind Millsap from day one. I think he’s one of the more undervalued players in this draft class.
Indiana Pacers – Avery Bradley, Point Guard, Texas: Bradley might not be a point guard in the truest sense, but some people are touting him as a Russell Westbrook-type, and the Pacers desperately need a point. I don’t know if he’ll ever make and All-Star team, but his shooting ability and lock-down defense will make him valuable right away.
New Orleans Hornets – Al-Farouq Aminu, Small Forward, Wake Forest: People are in love with Aminu’s physical attributes, but I’m not sold on him. He lacks the strength to play the four and the skills to play the three; I think he could definitely be a bust. I’d wait until here to roll the dice.
Memphis Grizzlies – DeMarcus Cousins, Power Forward/Center, Kentucky: I’m not sure how this Zach Randolph situation is going to play out, but Cousins would be a good insurance policy. I am very worried about Cousins’ character, but he’s too talented to pass up here.
Toronto Raptors – Paul George, Shooting Guard/Small Forward: I’m assuming Chris Bosh is leaving town, which means I’m trying to hit a home run with this pick to set me up for the future. George has the potential to develop into a dominant offensive player on the perimeter and could form a deadly outside combination with DeMar DeRozan in the future.
Houston Rockets – Cole Aldrich, Center, Kansas: Nobody knows how well Yao is going to fare next season and the team doesn’t really have another true center on their roster. Aldrich lacks upside, but he should be a reliable defender and rebounder in the pros.
