Jimmy Buffett Tickets – Jimmy Buffett’s ‘Encores’ Attract Flocks of Parrotheads

Jimmy Buffett has made a name for himself over the years as a must-see live act for his eventful and tropical-themed live performances. Aside from the hula skirts and booze in the blender, part of the quintessential Jimmy Buffett concert experience is his acoustic set of encores at the end of each and every live show. Buffett has placated Parrotheads at concerts with encores for the last two decades, and he’s recently expanded his encore empire past that ‘one particular harbour.’

Last month, Buffett released a double disc of 22 live renditions of encores from concerts recorded during 2008 and 2009 tour dates. The compilation, aptly titled Encores, dropped at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 during the first week of May, becoming one of his only Top 10 hits recently. Jimmy Buffett, a niche artist whose success isn’t measured in album sales but rather in concert tickets, hasn’t seen a Top 10 release on the Billboard 200 since 2006’s Take the Weather with You, but now he’s riding high once again as a leading performer in the music industry.

Buffett’s live Encores compilation is chock-full of summery Buffett classics, ranging from clever tunes like “Growing Older but Not Up” to yearning slow-down songs like “He Went to Paris” and ultimate classics such as “A Pirate Looks at Forty” and “Coast of Carolina.” The Parrothead-in-chief explained his reasoning behind Encores in the liner notes of the album, with RTT News reporting him saying, “‘Encores’ is a collection of well known and not so well known songs that I think provide a happy ending to a musical meal… and dessert has always been my favorite.”

The Black Crowes concert at Newport Folk Festival on 02 Aug 08 $9.98 The Newport Folk Festival was never strictly limited to folk music, but the 2008 festival expanded the musical diversity more than ever before. Perhaps taking a cue from the massive success of younger festivals like Bonnaroo, the 2008 roster included bigger ticket artists like The Black Crowes (presented here), Jimmy Buffett, The Levon Helm Band, Trey Anastasio and The Cowboy Junkies, right along with the folk, bluegrass and blues troubadours that once topped the bill. Despite some weather issues, this approach turned out to be a resounding success and all of the headlining acts turned in memorable performances that often conveyed the influence of the traditional styles that originally launched the festival. One of the most surprising and highly anticipated groups to appear was The Black Crowes, who closed out the Saturday schedule, following a torrential downpour that significantly reduced the size of the festival audience. When they hit the main Fort Stage shortly after 5:00 PM, those that remained were treated to what many considered the highlight set of the festival. The performance was tempered in a way that paid tribute to the festival and its history, while still featuring plenty of the group’s trademark guitar driven rock, heavily influenced by groups like The Stones, The Faces and The Allman Brothers Band, which the Robinson brothers had grown up on. At this time The Black Crowes were 18-year veterans of the road with thousands of concerts behind them, and a true force in modern rock music. The band had weathered internal struggles in the preceding years and had just completed their seventh album, Warpaint, their strongest in over a decade. Just prior to the sessions, two personnel changes had taken place, with the addition of keyboard player Adam MacDougall and former North Mississippi Allstars guitarist Luther Dickinson being brought on board. One of the most highly anticipated and ultimately rewarding sets that year was presented by Levon Helm and his band, who performed second to last on the final day, just before Jimmy Buffett closed the festival. Performing before the largest audience on site that year, Helm sported a tight 13-piece band of talented musicians and singers that not only included blues harp legend Little Sammy Davis and guitar slingers Larry Campbell and Jimmy Vivino, but also the legendary Howard Johnson horn section, the leader of which may have performed with more Newport Festival acts over the years than any other musician. Helm originally attained his world class status as one of the most soulful singers in rock & roll history with The Band. His work with that group has influenced generations of artists, many of whom were on the Newport bill and have covered his songs. By the time of this concert, much of Helm’s musical focus revolved around his Midnight Rambles, an ongoing series of public jam sessions held at his barn and home studio in The Catskill Mountains of upstate New York. Featuring many of the musicians who also resided in the Woodstock/Bearsville area, along with a wide variety of ever-changing guests, these concerts helped raise the money for his mounting medica
