Marketing Yourself – 7 Steps to the Power Players Arena
How did they get the title of Power Player? Chances are they are no better at playing your game than you are yet they are considered the winners in your arena. Why are others seeking them out while you are still sitting behind your desk sending out post cards or cold calling potential clients?
It is very likely that these power hitters have found the key to success. Accordingly, they have realized that tooting their own horn is not the easiest task in the universe. They figured out long ago while they were out there with their horns blowing nobody was listening or worse everyone was hiding or running away.
Unless you are P Diddy, Donald Trump or you have your own Reality TV Show, tooting your own horn is never easy–in fact, it’s one of the most ineffective ways to market. Look at it this way, if you have a passion about something and you know you are really good at what you do, most likely you are going to want the world to know it too. But how do you get the world talking about you instead of them? How do you get on the A-list?
1) BRANDING
The first and most effective way to get you noticed is to brand yourself. What is branding? Certainly, if you are doing any kind of marketing, you have heard the term branding. Branding identifies you. It distinguishes you. It sets you apart and puts you in the Power Players arena. If you brand yourself tactfully and authentically, chances are you will be the buzz around your circle in no time. Power Players know this and have had an identity branded on themselves in their particular area of expertise. They have done so by placing a magnetic team of Public Relations specialists who toot their horn in every avenue possible. The right Public Relations team can get you noticed while you are busy doing what you do best!
2) SOCIAL MEDIA- UTILIZING THIS FREE TOOL WITHOUT WASTING TIME
There are tons of Power Players soaking up the Social Media Market and cashing in on it as well. They have learned the secrets of getting their name out there without wasting a lot of time hacking away at their computers. There are plenty of effective shortcuts to use on social networks like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and others that will get you noticed and keep you on top of the social media charts. In many of the social media networks, there are plenty of positive ways to leverage your messages so that others learn about you as well as your business in an authentic way. Being authentic will not only put you in the Power Players Arena but will also keep you there.
3) ATTENTION GRABBING HEADLINES
No matter what field you are in a good opening line gets you noticed. In copywriting, it’s called a hook. It’s proven that if the correct words are used in a headline, those reading it are going to want more. A good hook captivates your audience and keeps them coming back for more. Not everyone has the knack for powerful headlines however, but a professional copywriter has the know-how and expertise to write that perfect email subject line or that magnetic headline that will get you noticed. A perfect, attention grabbing headline is crucial for marketing your brand. If it seems like a task you’d rather not take on, hire a professional Copywriter or Public Relations Specialist to write that winning headline.
4) BLOGS, EZINES & NEWSLETTERS PUT YOU IN THE SPOTLIGHT OF THE POWER PLAY ARENA
Marketing your name all over the internet is what will put you in the forefront of your specific field. If you promote your passion authentically, provocatively, interestingly and effectively, you will without a doubt become A CELEBRITY IN YOUR NICHE. People will automatically come to you for your expertise. They will do this because you are real. If you present yourself as a real and authentic person with a passion, everyone will buy from you or just want to be in your celebrity circle because they feel like they know you personally. It’s all about promoting what you are passionate about in a very real and thought provoking way so that people want to listen. Blogs, Ezines and Newsletters are an ideal way to get your name out there without sounding like your blowing that bragging horn. You are giving information that others obviously are seeking. There are countless ways to get your blogs written and posted, your articles searched on the internet and your newsletters written and delivered to your audience.
5) IN-PERSON NETWORKING MAKES YOU RELEVANT
A good old-fashioned hand shake should make a lasting impression, and hopefully a positive one. There is nothing more effective and more rewarding than meeting people who are genuinely interested in you and what you have to say. You have already started to make a name for yourself with your expertise. The next step is to actually get out in the public eye and make it concrete. When your listeners and followers actually make real contact with you, it becomes like a valid hand shake or deal to them and to you for that matter. Those followers will be loyal to you forever. I am sure you know those “internet social media” types who have thousands of “friends” on their social media pages, but how many of those social media celebrities have actually made personal contact with those friends? My guess would be slim to zero. Your followers want to know you are a real human who they can trust and interact with in person, not just because you’ve accepted a friend request. Check with your local chambers, commerce clubs, network clubs and even your friends to see what kind of networking is going on in your area. It will be worth it.
6) UTILIZING AN OUTSIDE WORKFORCE TO WORK FOR YOU
You have to start thinking of yourself as a celebrity in your arena. You are the star. You have worked hard at crafting your field and becoming an expert and it’s time to reap the rewards. Look at it this way, Donald Trump is not jumping through hoops to get noticed and he is definitely not taking out his own trash to the curb at the end of the day. Donald Trump is reaping his rewards everyday and enjoying the life he created as a Power Player is his arena. Trump was savvy enough to learn the secret of that old saying, “Work smart, not hard.” He and other Power Players like him hire individuals who can do the grunt work for him. It may sound harsh, but face it; you can’t do everything and do it well. You have an expertise, but that’s not to say you can write an effective or entertaining blog about your expertise. One of the first steps in becoming the star in your arena is to learn to hand over some of the tasks that may not be your specialty. A virtual assistant is an excellent resource for you to utilize. A virtual assistant can assist with getting your work out on the internet, sending out emails and other administrative tasks. Another resource to utilize is a Public Relations Specialist. A PR person is an expert at plugging you, putting your name out there in a positive light, getting you exposure and pumping you up to celebrity status. After all, you are the star and a PR person will get that message across the universe in an effective and engaging way.
7) ALIGN YOURSELF WITH INDIVIDUALS WHO SUPPORT YOUR MISSION
Many a relationship has been severed or at least put on hold because not everyone in a certain circle is down for the cause. This is one of the most crucial and more difficult steps to achieve and stick with. It’s no secret that like minds can move mountains. It’s also no secret that a weak link can break an otherwise strong chain. In other words, stay away from the energy zappers, Debbie Downers and oppressors. It doesn’t mean that if your husband or significant other isn’t supporting your goals that you should kick him or her to the curb. It just means that you have a little bit of a tougher job convincing them to hop on the train before it takes off without them. The key is to stay focused on your goal and if that means putting blinders on temporarily, then do it and know it’s for the ultimate prize! Surrounding yourself with supportive people is the key to your powerful arena. The individuals who can be part of your empire from the ground up, those who are building the blocks one by one, and shopping for the perfect red carpet for your big debut are the ones who will help you move those mountains, happily escort you to the Power Players Arena and honor you when you get there!
These 7 steps to the Power Player Arena are just the beginning to building your empire. No matter what your idea of an empire is, believing in yourself and presenting yourself to the world authentically will be what keeps you there. You are not a fad, because fads change and die off. You are real and you have just begun to put yourself in the real world and the most powerful arena there is- your own!

The chapters range from studies of community queen pageants in Guatemala, Nicaragua, Andalusia and rural Minnesota, to studies of international contests held in Thailand, Belize, British Virgin Islands, Tonga and Tibet, and include a study of a Moslem Philippine transsexual beauty queen contest, and an ethnographic account by a contestant in the Miss Moscow 1989 pageant. These essays discuss the ways gender ideologies are represented and reinforced in beauty pageants and highlight the cultural specificity of notions of beauty and femininity that figure in the selection of pageant queens. We see the strategic and political uses to which pageants are put, by sponsors and contestants alike. Questions of gender aesthetics, performance, and display are engaged in a way that recognizes the agency of pageant participants even as it underscores the ideologies and structures of power within which they operate.
